Staff Development Committee- October 2, 2014

The Staff Development Committee had our first meeting.  This committee is comprised of teachers and administrators from each building's site team.

Our goal today was to identify professional learning needs in our district, aligned to our District Strategic Plan, data, and our building needs.  We spent some time going through the Strategic Plan, as well as the work we did last year in the area of professional learning.  We also had a great conversation about what professional learning we still need as a district.

Representatives are gathering feedback from building Site Teams and will report back to the committee on November 6, 2014.  At this time, we will begin to prioritize our needs moving forward into the 2014-2015 school year.

Language Arts Committee- September 30, 2014

The Language Arts Committee met last night for our first meeting.  This committee is off-cycle and will meet quarterly.

Common Core Instructional Shifts-
To begin our meeting, we reviewed the Common Core Instructional Shifts.  We spent some time identifying what the shifts were, as well as questions we had with implementation.  Then, we took a survey to see where our buildings and grade level/departments were in implementation of the shifts.

District Data-
We then looked through district data to establish our current reality- where are we at with reading/language arts?  We did a data walk, looking at trends and data by grade level.  The questions posed will help form our work this year, as well as goals with strategic planning.

District Assessments-
We looked at common assessment development- where we were at and what work still needed o be done.  Additionally, we talked about how every learning target does not need a formative assessment.

Next, we talked DIBELS.  We clarified how proper nouns are scored, as well as what training people need at the beginning of each school year.  We will update teachers of the DIBELS changes each year at grade level meetings in August.  Don't forget, we have a reading blog with videos and resources on DIBELS (http://owatonnareading.blogspot.com/).

Any questions about the agenda, see your Language Arts Rep or contact a member of the Teaching & Learning Department.
